UK's Top Security Official Labels Pro-Palestine Demonstrations Following Manchester Attack as 'Un-British'

The home secretary has stated that the decision by pro-Palestinian groups to continue with demonstrations urging an cessation to the conflict in Gaza following the recent lethal assault at a Jewish place of worship in Manchester was "deeply contrary to British principles".

Shabana Mahmood further added she would urge anyone planning attending these demonstrations to consider carefully how they would react if a family member was murdered on the holiest day of their belief system.

As additional information came to light about the attacker, identified by authorities as Jihad al-Shamie, the home secretary stated he was not familiar to anti-terror police and had not been referred to the UK's de-radicalization scheme.

Greater Manchester Police stated that Adrian Daulby, 53 and Melvin Cravitz, 66 died after the perpetrator drove into a gathering of individuals outside a local synagogue before assaulting another man. Several individuals were still in hospital while three other people arrested by police continued in custody.

The security minister used a series of media interviews to declare that Britain had seen a "increasing wave of antisemitism", emphasizing that the authorities would "not stand for that" as she tried to guarantee the Jewish community in the UK.

Security arrangements would be examined, she stated.

In response to questions about what some commentators had described as a environment of concern that Jewish people have encountered, notably since last year's Middle East violence in 2023 and the start of the war in Gaza, she said there was "undoubtedly great concern about events in the region but our priority is making sure our residents here at home are protected".

Discussing Palestinian-supporting rallies that went ahead on Thursday, she stated, "It was deeply regrettable to see those demonstrations going ahead last night. I think that conduct is deeply contrary to our principles. I think it is dishonourable. I would have preferred those individuals to just take a moment to reflect."

"The concerns that are inspiring those protests have been going on for a period. They don't appear they are going to finish any time soon. They could have allowed a group that has experienced tragedy just a short period to come to terms with what has occurred," stated Mahmood.

"To those who is thinking about going on a demonstration what I would advise is imagine that is you who has had a family member killed on the most sacred day of your beliefs," she stated.

"There will be time for your demonstration later. Just because you have the freedom to protest doesn't mean you have to use it," stated Mahmood.

"I maintain my request for people to show some compassion and some support to the relatives of those who have been killed and to our British Jews."

She stated that about 40 people had been detained at the previous day's demonstrations including some on allegations of attacking police.

The focus has now turned to London, where organizers of protests urging a prohibition on Palestine Action to be lifted have stated they intend to continue with a organized gathering on Saturday.
