Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Introduces a Beautifully Chaotic New Spear to Your World
The winter game drop for Minecraft has touched down β and it features the initial fresh armament added to the game since the mace made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it has the potential to alter your gameplay in Minecraft, especially if you enjoy mayhem.
An Armament Designed for Chaotic Rides
The Mounts of Mayhem drop also introduces a host of fresh elements and updates centered around riding animals in the game. That central theme made the spear the natural choice for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we aimed for a fresh armament that would provide extended reach, and we envisioned it for mounted combat," noted a lead developer. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the spear was the one that both handled superbly when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the use case."
If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can charge at your friends on horseback, the response is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action perfectly suited for it.
"Mounted lance combat] is one of the biggest applications for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead says. "The spear has a pair of offensive moves: You have the thrust, where you pierce your enemy. But you also have a sprinting strike where you lower your spear and get more damage [with] the more momentum you have. So [itβs] ideal for jousting on horses."
Aerial Mayhem & Deep-Sea Exploration
The unruly pleasure can extend beyond there, though. If you're advanced sufficiently into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are in the end-game, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and going out and making some real mayhem," she hints.
In other words: Aerial lance combat is now a reality, and it needs to become an competitive event immediately.
Another key feature in this new update is the Nautilus. This sea-dwelling mob, which is modeled after the seashells players have gathered for years, can be tamed and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it carry you through the water more swiftly than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no necessity to surface for fresh air.
The rest of the additions are primarily things that want to kill you, as is the nature of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, frequently with a zombie villager on its back. If you manage to take care of the Drowned, though, you can tame the undead mount β or the regular one, for that matter β with a spiky fish.
"We've pondered this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it felt like the right time to also introduce something for aquatic environments," the developer elaborates. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a several proposals for underwater mounts that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the tie-in to the Nautilus shell that was found within the game."
She also notes that there are actually two different types of undead nautilus: regular and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you encounter underwater."
Parched Perils & Overdue Enhancements
Additional features include the sun-proof skeletons, biome-specific skeletons that can survive in the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you venture in that environment. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another fresh creature. These passive, zombified camels have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The applies equally to zombie horses, who have a comparable exposed-rib aesthetic and can sometimes be spawned in the darkness with a spear-carrying undead rider on their back.
The last two things on the drop's list are minor quality-of-life improvements, including some much-anticipated tweaks to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse waterways while riding a horse. Also, netherite horse armor is now available at the workbench, so you can give your horse the top-tier safeguarding it deserves.
A Fittingly Chaotic Finale
Overall, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own β and the mayhem it enables β would have constituted a major improvement. Add in the Nautilus, and additional creatures seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a touch more chaotic.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is live for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
