Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when multiple of them entered the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Parallel situations in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
