Hazbin Hotel's Creator Unveils Alastor and Rosie's Backstory Is a Major Season 3 Tease
Dedicated fans of the series finally received a long-awaited backstory in the second season's fourth episode, called “It's a Deal.” This episode will probably spark extensive conversation and pose numerous inquiries about the nature of one particular demon Overlord who seems significantly stronger than anyone previously realized. The new revelations include a look into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character prior to his demise and condemnation to the underworld.
A Major Tease for Upcoming Installments
The series creator disclosed an inside detail about the episode – it acts as a major tease for the third season. She also offered further details into the methodology of creating the human versions of her demonic animated characters.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, the show's second season.
In “It’s a Deal”, a look back discloses that fan-favorite character Alastor, the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his mortal days. Knowing full well he was headed to the underworld, he made contact with the afterlife beforehand to secure a strong position there. The charismatic leader, the charismatic leader Hell’s cannibal community, vowed Alastor he would become “the strongest Sinner in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This raises the question: How is this character sufficiently strong to elevate Alastor over every other Sinner Demons?
“The Rosie and Alastor deal is the first stepping stone in a larger narrative that encompasses a great deal, leading into the third season,” the creator explains. “Clearly that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The solution could be many things, but the revelation is in season three. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling how long viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The production companies have approved the third and fourth seasons, but the showrunner frequently remarks that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and subsequent seasons have no release dates yet. Still, she states holding off on those details is a crucial aspect of keeping the second season's focus where it belongs.
“The challenge of any agreement with infernal beings, or stories that have mysteries, is providing people just enough information to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that as we go, and allowing that be satisfying,” she says. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in The Next Season
The showrunner promises that the upcoming season will address the questions followers have been asking, like why the cannibal leader commanded Alastor to vanish for seven years, which diminished his power in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the pacts these individuals are making, and all that — it's feeding into a bigger narrative,” she says.
In the meantime, the origin story episode offers another glimpse into how the main characters of Demonic Sinners appeared as as mortals, following after seeing another character's historical human form in episode 2. She explains that a lot of thought went into the visual creation of these forms.
“The human versions of these personas hold great significance,” she notes. “They vary from looking quite distinct from their infernal version to seeming almost identical. With the first character, the initial design we see, there was some internal discussion internally between choosing something that represents the personality, versus selecting something that's historically correct. We opted for creating something that just seemed like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his lengthy locks: “We were like, ‘No one typically had long hair of that style in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we think the outline is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he appeared attractive. We were like, ‘This seems correct.’ We sort of provided the rationale that he's a hermit, so he just let his hair grow out. So there is always a solution. As we create the mortal forms of these characters […] it's such a fun thing to explore and determine. I am looking forward for people to see more of what the human forms look like.”
New episodes of Hazbin Hotel the second season are released on midweek on the streaming service.
