Ceasefire Deal Provides Comfort to the Palestinian territory, Yet Concerns Remain Over Future

On Thursday morning, people witnessed scant happiness throughout the Palestinian enclave. Reports of the pending peace agreement had circulated quickly throughout the war-torn region in the dark hours, with a few gunshots aimed at the clouds to express relief, yet with the arrival of dawn the atmosphere turned to apprehensive waiting.

“People remain frightened,” remarked a young woman in her twenties in al-Mawasi, the squalid, overcrowded coastal strip where numerous families have taken refuge under temporary shelters along with synthetic huts.

“We are waiting for a formal declaration along with concrete assurances to reopen the border passages, allowing food deliveries, and halting the violence, destruction and forced relocations.”

Close by, a 64-year-old man named Abbas Hassouna explained that his household were anticipating a formal proclamation and solid commitments for border access, bringing in food, and ceasing the slaughter, destruction and exile”.

“After witnessing these changes, only then will we truly believe them. However currently, fear remains. Parties might renege without warning or break the agreement like previous instances and we will remain in the same endless cycle devoid of progress except more suffering,” said Hassouna, who is from northern Gaza though he has faced expulsion several times.

Conflicting Feelings Throughout Residents

A middle-aged resident Ola al-Nazli said she had learned of the ceasefire from her neighbours in the al-Mawasi zone. “I did not know how to feel, about feeling joyful or mournful. We have experienced this on numerous prior occasions, and each time we were disappointed again, so this time fear and caution have reached new heights,” Nazli stated, who had to abandon her residence in Gaza City because of the recent armed conflict there.

“People reside in temporary shelters which offer little protection from chilly conditions or from the bombing. Individuals with savings or occupations were stripped of all assets. Consequently any joy we feel is accompanied by suffering and anxiety. My sole wish that we might exist securely, away from detonations, not having to relocate, and that access points will open soon,” Nazli concluded.

Relief Preparations Underway

Relief groups said they were preparing to “flood” Gaza with food and vital provisions. The 20-point plan ensures a surge of humanitarian assistance. The leader of the global health agency, the health organization’s leader, said his agency was equipped to expand operations to meet the dire health needs throughout the territory, and to support rehabilitation of the destroyed health system”.

The United Nations organization dedicated to refugee assistance, hailed the agreement as significant comfort, and mentioned it maintained sufficient food reserves beyond the territory to sustain the devastated territory’s 2.3 million residents for the coming three months. While increased support has arrived in the region in recent weeks, supplies continue to be severely inadequate, relief staff reported.

Hope and Anxiety Among Evacuated Residents

Jihad al-Hilu heard the news about the peace agreement on a radio as he sat in his shelter located in the al-Mawasi area. “In that instant, I felt a mix of happiness and comfort, like a glimmer of optimism came back to my spirit following an extended period. We anxiously awaited this occasion, for the blood to stop and for the slaughter that have broken so many homes to conclude,” Hilu, 33 shared.

“Simultaneously, there is a great fear residing inside us. We fear that this peace arrangement might be temporary and that the war may restart as it did before.”

Additionally exist general worries concerning what stability may bring to Gaza, where more than 90% of dwellings have been damaged or demolished, almost all infrastructure destroyed and where many people goes hungry every day. More than 67,000 Palestinians mostly civilians have been killed amid armed conflict commenced after the militant attack during late 2023, that resulted in 1,200 deaths also mostly civilians and 251 people abducted by militants.

“What worries me above all else is the deficiency of protection. Starvation is tolerable, however danger represents the actual calamity. I am concerned that the region may transform into a place of chaos controlled by criminal groups and paramilitary organizations in place of legal systems.”

Present Conditions

Local sources indicated armed units discharged artillery to prevent Palestinians reentering the northern sector of the territory on Thursday morning but reported absence of combat noises or aerial bombardments.

A resident named Nadra Hamadeh, whose sister, her sister’s husband, two young relatives and son in law perished during the conflict, said she hoped to come back from al-Mawasi to northern Gaza as soon as possible to assess her property, that she thinks experienced destruction yet remains standing.

“There is deep sorrow for individuals who surrendered their relatives and offspring and properties … Regarding our situation, we hope for returning to our home that we had to leave behind. The emotion continues as if our souls were extracted from our beings when we left,” Hamadeh, 57 expressed.

“We desire that conflict concludes,
