2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Age of the Croaking Craze.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a niche presence. But, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To grasp this phenomenon, I conducted a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a consistent uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming seems particularly powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Frankly, this is a trend I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have inherent appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are ideally shaped to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues facilitate a wide array of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year so far.

If these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
